SonyEricsson K810i
( actual size*)

K810i is SonyEricsson's top-of-the-line camera phone, next in series of very successful K800 model. The phone has usual bar type form factor. Not very light ( wt.103 g ). It comes in two beautiful colours - Noble Blue and Golden Ivory with classic SonyEricsson finish. The most striking difference in this handset is the newly designed round metallic keys on the keypad. It's slimmer design due to more compact active camera shutter, dedicated keys facilitating camera operations are the updated features.

Camera:
Excellent 3.2 megapixel Cyber-shot™ camera at the back has active lens cover which automatically launches the viewfinder application when opened. The viewfinder takes few seconds to boot, after which you can capture an image or start video recording. Above the display are two keys related to camera function,
one for scene settings and the other changes shoot mode. Leftmost keys 1, 4, 7, and * also have special function when the viewfinder is on, to change resolution, focus, self timer settings and flash settings respectively. These keys light up when the camera is being used.

The camera options also feature night mode, self-timer, panorama, frames, and burst shooting modes along with powerful autofocus. It also offers white balance correction, many color effects and a BestPicTM shoot mode. The phone features fantastic Xenon flash with Red eye reduction option. The quality of the outdoor shoot is very good as always while indoor shoots are also good with night mode and flash.

The videos are captured at low QCIF resolution. The secondary VGA camera is used for self portrait while video calling. There is also a possibility to view your own image mirror-like.

Display:
The TFT display of 240 x 320 pixels is pretty sharp. The Sony Ericsson K810i has several preinstalled themes having different color schemes and wallpapers. It can display up to 256K colours and makes using the full screen viewfinder for the camera a great experience.

The Keypad
The newly-designed round metallic keys are convenient as they protrude out but as compared to the feather touch keys in some other phones, they look quite old fashioned.

The left side of the phone features only the Memory Stick Micro M2 memory card slot and a dedicated Radio start/stop key. The bottom features the regular Fast Port, the in-call microphone and a hook for attaching a strap. The right side of the handset hosts the volume keys which can also be used for zooming the pictures, the camera shutter key and the Infrared port. Back side of the phone is made up of matte plastic and sports the main 3.2 megapixel camera with its active cover, the loudspeaker and the Xenon flash.

Phonebook:
The phonebook has a capacity of storing 1000 contacts. You can choose between SIM contacts and the phone contacts and set the default. Both lists cannot be displayed simultaneously although you can make the phone to autosave to the SIM card.

For a contact you can add Phone number, Mobile, Home, Work, Fax and Other. Another field for a contact is for email and web addresses. The third is for assigning a picture and a custom ringtone. The fourth for Address and fifth for additional information and birth date. When you add the birth date, the phone asks you whether you would like to add it to the calendar and set a reminder.

Music & Video:
Sony Ericsson K810i music player supports MP3, AAC, AAC+, E-AAC+, WAV, WMA, M4A and MIDI file formats. Sound is good. The integrated FM radio has 20 preset stations and supports RDS. The player can be set to run in background too. The video quality is pretty good. You can watch video in landscape mode also.

Memory:
The internal memory of SonyEricsson K810i is 64MB. Another 128 MB external memory can be attached using a Memory Stick Micro M2 memory card. Although it seems insufficient for a 3 megapixel cameraphone.

Browsing pictures and Videos is easy with thumbnail view. If you highlight a video thumbnail it starts playing as a preview. Another convenient feature is the Timeline view, that allows you to select pictures according to the date they have been stored. The pictures can be seen in portrait or landscape mode. When viewing the pictures one by one the phone preloads a lower quality preview to allow fast browsing. You can zoom in to the actual size of the picture or even more.

Connectivity:
The phone has USB, Bluetooth and Infrared as connectivity options. The USB connectivity has two modes, one for file transfers and one for using the phone as a modem for internet access on a laptop. It also supports Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP profile, which means that you can use a stereo Bluetooth headset with it. The handset also has  Human Interface Device (HID) Bluetooth profile which allows the phone to be used as a remote control for PC and other Bluetooth-enabled devices.

Internet:
For accessing the internet, Sony Ericsson K810i supports WAP 2.0, HTML (NetFront), GPRS Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots) at 32 - 48 kbps, HSCSD,  3G at 384 kbps and RSS reader provided your network provides these. Using NetFront Internet browser you can view the pages fullscreen with no menus and can even browse in landscape mode. The Smart-fit function of the browser does a goob for fitting the web content into the screen. Scrolling is fast once the page has downloaded completely. It supports content created for HTML 4.01, xHTML 1.0, CSS and Java script, WAP 2.0. The supported security protocols are SSL/TLS.

Applications:
Some useful applications are also included in the phone like a very simple MusicDJTM for creating polyphonic melodies and VideoDJTM  for editing video clips using special effects and by adding background music. In addition there are three more applications - FaceWarp, which is used to manipulate portrait shots by adding funny effects. HP Print application that facilitates direct printing of pictures, contacts or Agenda to a real or virtual printer and new Photo Mate application which offers various settings, tips and tricks for shooting good photos.

Voice Recorder:
This phone also has a Voice Recorder that does not have any limit for the duration of the recording as all free memory is available for the purpose.

The phone has a dedicated Flight mode.

The Organizer includes all other necessary functions like Alarm, Calendar, Calculator, Tasks, Notes, Timer, Stopwatch, Code memo etc. The phone supports local (with Outlook and PC) and remote ( with remote servers) synchronization of contacts and calendar events.

There is an Activity menu which has a dedicated shortcut key on the keypad. It offers quick access to recent events, the web menu and the My Shortcuts menu which contains a list of frequently used features and can be modified to the user preference.
