Samsung strengthens its mobile portfolio with Affordable, Full Touch screen phones

New Delhi, May 8, 2009 – Samsung today strengthened its touch screen portfolio by announcing the launch of Samsung Star and Samsung Star 3G full touch screen phones in the Indian market. Boasting compact design and intuitive usability, the products answer today’s customer needs for full touch phones at more affordable price points. Samsung Star, which leads the Company’s affordable touch screen portfolio, represents the first touch screen phone that the Company is manufacturing at its state of the art, manufacturing facility at Noida.  “Samsung Star and Samsung Star 3G are significant additions to our full-touch screen mobile portfolio, featuring all the essential functions in one single device. At Samsung , our effort is to deliver various full touch products for every consumer lifestyle,” states Mr Sunil Dutt, Country Head, Samsung Mobile Division .Accordingly , Samsung today also announced the launch of its innovative , music phone with touch screen functionality , Samsung BEAT^DJin the Indian market .

Samsung Star (S5233)

Samsung Star comes with the latest multimedia features in a slim and compact body that measure a mere 11.9mm. Adopting a 7.63 cm WQVGA full-touch screen and Samsung’s TouchWiz User Interface with Mobile Widgets, the phone enables its users to enjoy their mobile easily and intuitively. Using “Photo Contact,” users can call a contact by simply touching an appointed image. It also comes with a Stylus for the convenience of consumers.

The Samsung Star boasts various multimedia features including a 3.2 mega-pixel camera with smile recognition capability. It supports multi-format playback and DNSe for ease of use and better sound quality.

Samsung Star comes with a unique Gesture Control feature that allows the user to unlock the Touch screen or run an application just by giving a gesture command. Thus, the phone allows the user to customize the applications to a great degree. E.g. for calling your friend, you don’t need to search his /her number in the contacts list .Just give a gesture command (A, B or C as per your preference and setting) - the phone will recognize the command and dial the number simultaneously. In addition, the user can also customize various applications like C- Call, M – Music, I – Internet etc.

The phone also features music recognition using Shazam’s “Find Music” service.To enjoy various multimedia content , Samsung Star supports 50MB Internal memory, expandable up to 8GB. Users can enjoy full Internet browsing with an accelerometer sensor for auto-rotation. It supports Google applications like Google Search, Gmail, Google maps; online widgets and photo blogging. For convenience, the phone supports a virtual QWERTY keyboard for messaging and handwriting features. It is priced at Rs.11, 100/-.

Samsung Star 3G (S5603)

The Samsung Star 3G attracts style-conscious users with its slim and compact design. Full Internet browsing support with an accelerometer sensor for auto-rotation also gives users exciting mobile Internet experiences. Samsung Star 3G, as the name suggests, is a 3G enabled phone.

Equipped with a QVGA full-touch screen, Samsung Star 3G adopted the TouchWiz User Interface and “Gesture Control” feature, designed to customize and personalize the way you use your phone. Mobile widgets can be placed on the screen for one-click access to your favorite applications. Samsung Star 3G comes with a 3.2 mega-pixel camera with Power LED Flash.The handset’s generous memory (80MB Internal memory, expandable up to 8GB) ensures ample storage space for multimedia content. It is priced at Rs.14499/-.

Samsung BEAT^DJ

Following the success of its Beat Series of music phones – Beat 450 and Beat 270 last year, Samsung today announced the launch of Samsung BEATDJ in the Indian market. Samsung BEAT^DJ represents the perfect combination of full touch-screen technology, incredible sound and beautiful design. Running Samsung’s intuitive DISC User Interface, BEAT^DJ comes fully loaded with Bang & Olufsen audio technology. “Samsung BEAT DJ is designed to take music on mobile phones to a whole new level of quality and exciting user experience. With amazing sound quality and advanced music application, the BEAT^DJ will appeal to a growing base of consumers who want to consolidate their music playing devices without compromising on style, function and experience.” states Mr. Dutt.

The Samsung BEATDJ allows everyone to be a DJ. With its BEAT DJ application & DISC UI, users will be able to add preloaded voice samples and sound effects to their favourite songs and record it.

With the phones’ full-touch technology and BEAT DJ application, users can also ‘scratch’ the records on the super clear 7.1 cms AMOLED Full Touch display to create their personal music. With 50MB of on-board memory - expandable to 8GB with the micro SD card slot - there’s plenty of room to let the musical imagination run wild.

With the launch of the three new touch screen phones , Samsung now has a portfolio of seven , feature rich , touch screen phones , ranging from Samsung Star to its flagship touch screen phone , Samsung Ultra^TOUCH , launched in the month of April ’09. The perfectly beautiful and fully equipped full-touch slider phone, Samsung Ultra^TOUCH is the world’s first 8MP Camera phone with AMOLED screen. The other touch screen phones in the Company’s portfolio include Samsung TouchWiz (F480), Samsung OMNIA (I900) and Samsung Pixon (M8800). The Samsung touch screen portfolio is priced in the range between Rs. 11,100/- to Rs 32,200/-. “Our full touch screen handset range is getting a strong consumer acceptance based on its large full touch screen display, stylish form factor as well as the precision and ease with which the touch applications work on the phones “states Mr. Dutt.

Most of the Samsung touch screen phones are 3G enabled. “The Samsung touch screen phones are designed to deliver the full benefits of 3G - Large screen for enhanced data and video downloads, interactive user interface, multimedia features and good memory” states Mr. Dutt. Based on the enhancement of its touch screen and multimedia phone portfolio, the Company expects the contribution from multimedia phones to be 40-45% of its total GSM handset sales this Year. Samsung Mobile handset range comprising of over 50 handset models, is priced in the range between Rs.1649/- to Rs. 34,500/-
