Nokia Nseries also used this platform to highlight the mobile entertainment market opportunity in India, which currently stands at $ 15,000 million (source: BW) and expected to bring in the next big killer applications on the mobile platform. As a part of this, a select panel discussion on the theme ‘The Future of Mobile Entertainment’ was conducted.
The panel witnessed distinguished industry stalwarts debating the role of various stakeholders (OEMs, content providers, distributors and operators) in helping the industry leapfrog and overcome challenges in the arena of mobile entertainment. It was conducted by Mr. Vineet Taneja, Business Director, Multimedia, Nokia India, Mr. Pradeep Gupta, MD, IDC India and Chairman–cum-Managing Director, Cyber Media, Mr. Rajat Kakkar, CEO Universal Music and Mr. Neeraj Roy, CEO, Hungama.
The panel discussion brought in insightful perspectives on the burgeoning Indian mobile entertainment market, which currently accounts for 37 per cent of the $ 28,000 million non-SMS mobile data revenues. Issues such as the mobile entertainment market ecosystem, challenges facing the industry today and measures for future growth were discussed at length. A wide range of topics were debated including the need to push more innovative content, adopt a stringent IP mechanism to control piracy of content, Government’s support for higher bandwidth and the need to go beyond the traditional approach.
Mr. Pradeep Gupta, MD, IDC India and Chairman–cum-Managing Director, Cyber Media, said, “The mobile music (ringtones, ringback tones and full track) market, for one, shows promising prospects. It has been a major contributor to the growth of the non-voice mobile services revenues, accounting for US$ 227 million of revenues in CY2006 and expected to reach US$ 476 million in CY2007. With evolution of the Indian mobile customer’s needs, desires and demand for better connectivity these services are expected to do extremely well in the months and years ahead.”
