Nokia 6680  - the Imaging Smart phone
( Review )

Nokia 6680
( actual size )
Nokia 6680 is 3G and EDGE enabled Imaging Smart phone. While looks is more of a personal choice, Nokia 6680 is normal bar type professional looking phone with a slightly curved back making it more comfortable to hold. Its dimensions are 108.6 x 55.2 x 20.5 mm and it weighs 133 gms. It is made up of good material with many parts chrome plated.

It is a Dual Mode phone, featuring UMTS and tri-band GSM (900/1800/1900MHz). 6680 is capable of switching automatically between bands and modes.

6680 is truely a smart phone with features set to blow out the competition.

Camera:
The 6680 sports two cameras - one a 1.3 megapixel camera on the back with flash, protected by a sliding cover, and a VGA camera in the front. The front camera is more useful for the video call function. Video call is a 3G network service where you can share video clips during a call. Nokia 6680 is capable of video calls, but you will have to wait for one more year, we hope, for the networks in India embracing 3G.

Its 1.3 megapixel camera at the back creates images of 1280 x 960 pixels in size. Availability of an LED flash enables you to shoot in the dark but its range is roughly 1.5 metres. When the light is dim, switch on the Night mode. It also has a Sequence mode that enables you to shoot 6 photos in rapid succession. Brightness, contrast, white balance, and colour tone can also be adjusted while shooting. Camera's zoom function is very strong with which you can take clear picture of an object as far as 50 feet away.

Video recording:
Nokia 6680 can also record video clips in either 176x144 or 128x96 sizes. Mute function turns off the microphone while recording a clip. You can record short 35 seconds clips to be sent via MMS or email, or you can record clips of any length limited only by the space on your memory card. The front camera can be used for self video clips.

Applications:
Pre-installed applications include  To Do list, Calculator, Converter, Voice recorder, Clock and Wallet. Besides these usual ones, it has Quickoffice, an application suite that consists of Quickword, Quicksheet and Quickpoint. This is really very useful for business users who need to view Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and Powerpoint presentations on the go. However, this is ' view only' version of Quickoffice. If you want to edit the files, you will have to purchase the full version.

In addition, Nokia 6680 comes with Info Print that lets you print messages, contact details, notes etc. directly and wirelessly on to  any Basic Print Profile equipped printer with Bluetooth connectivity. It also has Img Print, an app that allows you to print from any PictBridge-compliant printer.

There is also a Photo Editor, Movie Editor and an application called Kodak Mobile, which lets you to upload your photos to a Kodak Mobile Phone Online Album via GPRS or MMS. You can also print your pictures at participating Kodak Express outlets by connecting your phone to 'Picture Maker' kiosks found in these outlets via Bluetooth.

The Data Transfer feature allows you to easily transfer phonebooks, messages, pictures etc. from other Nokia Series 60 phones. This is  convenient for users upgrading to the 6680 from previous Series 60 phones.

Interesting part here is that you can install a host of your own selective applications.

Connectivity:
It has great connectivity capability and can connect to almost every network in the world including WCDMA networks. Nokia 6680 supports 3G, GPRS and EDGE networks. It does not have an infrared port, but it does support Bluetooth v1.2. The 6680 also features Push to Talk (PTT). Surfing is fast with WAP 2.0 / xHTML browser.

Its email client supports both POP and IMAP protocols. The e-mail can have attachments of any type like Word documents, Excel spreadsheets and Powerpoint presentations including ZIP files. You can also schedule automatic e-mail retrieval.

The SMS system works well where multiple recipients can also be selected. You can use text templates. New words can be added to the dictionary. It has T9 for predictive text input.

The 6680 also supports USB 2.0 via the pop-port connector for fast synchronization of data. It can also be used as a modem for your laptop or PC.

Diplay:
It has a bright large (176 x 208 pixels) TFT display capable of displaying 256K colours. A sensor on top left corner of the front cover automatically adjusts the display brightness and keypad backlight. In a dimly lit room, it will automatically switch on the keypad backlight and dim the screen while in in the sun, the keypad backlight will be turned off and the screen brightness maximized.

Keypad:
As the screen is getting larger in upcoming mobile phones, the key pad is getting cramped, specially in bar type phones. Still 6680 keypad is attractive with thin comfortable keys. Something different here is that the few keys like Menu, Call, End, Clear and Edit keys are placed vertically on either side of the keypad.

Memory:
The 6680 has 10mb of built-in memory, and comes bundled with a 64mb RS-MMC card. Memory card slot is conveniently placed on the right side of the phone from where you can easily change the memory card, no need to remove the battery at the back to insert the memory card as is the case with some other models.

OS:
The Nokia 6680 runs on Symbian OS version 8.0a, where the UI is quite fast in opening applications. The 6680 is efficient in multitasking too, so you can leave some application open in the background while using some other function.

6680 has Active Standby feature where it displays upcoming calendar appointments. That is useful. Although this feature can be turned off too in the Settings menu. When it is turned off, 5 different directions of the navigation button display camera, contacts list, new message and calendar. Good part is that these directional shortcuts can be customized to your liking, including the left and right selection keys.

The 6680 has a nice profile management system. There are a number of default profiles available, and you can create your own also  if you wish. Each profile can be linked to one or more groups of contacts. The 6680 also has an Offline profile which enables you to use Nokia 6680 aeroplane. It also functions without a SIM card.

It supports Voice dialing where you pre-record the voice tags and when you need to call up, press on the Voice Command key, wait for the prompt and say the name.

Music:
One thing to please music buffs is that Nokia 6680 has stereo output, good voice quality and loudness. Built-in Realplayer enables you to listen to your MP3 files on the go. MP3 and AAC files can be used as ringtones also. One drawback here is that It does not have FM radio. The Realplayer application can also be used to watch videos, as well as stream live content ( on a fast EDGE or 3G connection).

Games:
Nokia 6680 is meant to be a professional business tool, hence only 2 games are included - Snake EX and Card Deck. Although more games can be downloaded from the Internet.

missing:
no FM radio
no infrared port
no automatic keypad-locking system
less built-in games

Advantage:
Solid professional design
3G & EDGE support
powerful cameras with zoom and flash
video call
Packed with features
Good applications support

It is truely a professional phone and you will definately like it.
