Hutchison group's
67% stake in Hutchison-Essar is up for sale
The Hong Kong based Hutchison
group's 67% stake in Hutchison-Essar is up for sale. According to industry
sources, the Essar group which has the first right of refusal, made
an offer yesterday to buy the said stake at an estimated enterprise value
of $17-18 billion. The offer was made through Morgan Stanley and Bear Stearns
who are the advisors. The Essar group is believed to have received a line
of credit of about $10 billion from Citibank and Morgan Stanley.
The Essar group has the first
right of refusal if the stake is sold to an Indian bidder while Hutchison
is free to sell it to foreign bidders.
The parties that have shown
interest in the bid so far include Vodafone, Reliance Communications and
Texas Pacific-led consortium with Malaysia’s Maxis. Hutch's advisor is
Goldman Sachs. The talks are on but no formal bids have been placed yet
by anybody except Essar.

Bharti
has become the first Indian telecom service provider to launch 3G services.
Telecom Seychelles, a subsidiary of Bharti Global, has launched 3G operations
in Seychelles. The Company, which has been has been providing telecom services
in Seychelles since 1998 under the Airtel brand, has made significant investments
for rolling out state-of-the-art 3G services. Telecom Seychelles is also

subscriber base crosses 100 million mark in India
According
to latest COAI release, total GSM subscriber
base in India crossed 100 million mark in the month of November 2006,
well ahead of expectations. The GSM industry has added 5 million subscribers
last month. In terms of the GSM subscriber base, India is now placed third
after China and Russia. On the other hand CDMA subscriber base stands at
around 35 million as per AUSPI figures.

quarter
Reliance Communications
Limited ("RCOM") today announced its unaudited consolidated financial results
for the quarter ended 30th September, 2006. The highlights of financial
performance are: Net Profit of Rs. 702 crore (US$ 153 million), compared
to a loss of Rs. 19 crore (US$ 4 million) in the corresponding quarter
last year; EBITDA at Rs. 1,353 crore (US$ 294 million), growth of 216%
over the corresponding quarter last year; Revenue growth of 40% at Rs.
3,526 crore (US$ 767 million) compared to Rs. 2,522 crore (US$ 549 million);
EBITDA margin expands to 38% from 17% in the corresponding quarter last
year, with strong contributions across all businesses - Wireless, Global
and Broadband.
