commencing operations within the Nokia India Telecom Industry Park. The

GSM accounts for 74%
of the new additions in February 2006
According to latest COAI
press release, the GSM industry added 3.2 million subscribers in the month
of February 2006 and crossed the 65 million mark to touch 65.2 million
subscribers. The GSM mobile industry continues to hold 77% of the total
mobile market in India and accounts for 74% of the new additions, that
is, 3 out of every 4 new mobile subscribers are opting for GSM.

Rolls Out GSM Phone

Samsung Telecommunications
has finally started production of its GSM handsets at its Manesar plant
in Gurgaon, Haryana. SGH - X200 is the first model rolled out. The plant
is set up with an investment of US$15 million. The unit plans to produce
20 million units per annum by 2010.
Flagging off this unit, Mr.
H. C. Ryu, Managing Director - Samsung Telecommunication India said, “Indian
GSM phone market is growing at over 60 per cent every year and Samsung
is strategically planning to hold be one of the leading player in this
sector. Our new manufacturing unit at Manesar is a major step in this direction
which will not only provide us the price advantage to produce locally but

and MTNL introduce "One India plan"
BSNL
and MTNL have introduced "One India plan" for Cellular as well as Fixed/WLL
services which will be effective from 1st March, 2006. In case of cellular
services, the call charges for Intra circle call to BSNL mobile would be
40 paisa/min and 60 paisa/min for post-paid and pre-paid users respectively.
All other calls including (intra / inter circle calls) would be charged
only Re.1/- on both pre and post paid connections. However monthly fixed
charges in case of post-paid card are Rs.299/- while the cost of pre-paid
card is Rs.799/- where Rs.249/- are processing charges, Rs.550/- worth
of Talk value available and validity period is 30 days. For Fixed/WLL services
also the monthly fixed charges are Rs.299/- and rate per metered call unit
is Re.1.
How
other private service providers would react to this announcement would
be of interest in the coming days but we hope customers will get the ultimate
benefit. Mr. Vikram Mehmi, CEO, IDEA Cellular Ltd. quoted - "We have
always supported the initiative of One India of the government from Day
1. We are happy that it has become a reality, however we await removal
of floor rates of carriage charge to pass on the benefits to the customers".
