RIL TO USHER IN A BROADBAND REVOLUTION IN INDIA
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) today announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire a substantial stake in Infotel Broadband Services (P) Ltd, which has emerged as a successful bidder in all the 22 circles of the auction for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) Spectrum conducted by the DoT. RIL will invest about Rs 4,800 crore by way of subscription to fresh equity capital at par to be issued by Infotel Broadband. Post this investment, RIL will own 95% of the equity and Infotel Broadband will be a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited. more...

Reliance Webstore commences market roll-out of India’s cheapest touchscreen CDMA phone

3G auction in India
A very aggressive and extensive bidding process for 3G spectrum, lasting over a month, resulted in Rs.67,719 crore for the government. BHARTI, RELIANCE and AIRCEL topped the list by winning 13 circles each for Rs.12296 cr, Rs.8585 cr and Rs. 6500 cr respectively. IDEA won 11 circles for Rs.5769 cr while VODAFONE and TATA won 9 circles each for Rs.11618 cr and Rs.5864 cr respectively. STel won 3 circles for Rs.338 cr. Delhi and Mumbai were the most sort after circles for the bidders. Spectrum allocation will take place in September. It is expected that 3G services will start rolling for the consumers by Diwali this year.

Vodafone Essar announces successful outcome of 3G auction in India

Vodafone Essar announces today that it has successfully secured 3G spectrum in  9 circles in the just concluded 3G auctions for a total price of Rs. 11,617 crore. These circles - Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai & Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra & Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh (East) and West Bengal - cover over 60% of the Company’s current customer base. Vodafone Essar CEO & Managing Director Marten Pieters said: “Vodafone Essar has secured a critical strategic footprint across the country, particularly in the markets where we expect the main demand for 3G services to be in the next few years. We are excited to be able to offer 3G services to our customers and aim to launch the services before the end of the year.  We expect a strong uptake for 3G in these markets particularly among the higher value customers, which is a growing segment owing to rising affluence and increasing urban population. Reliance Communications (RCOM) announces its audited financial results for the financial year ended March 31, 2010
Reliance Communications Limited (RCOM) today announced its audited consolidated financial results for the year ended March 31, 2010. Highlights of the financial performance for the year are: Net Profit of Rs. 4,655 crore (US$ 991 million), EBITDA at Rs. 7,821 crore (US$ 1,665 million), EBITDA margin at 35.3% with strong contribution from all businesses – Wireless, Global and Enterprise, Revenue at Rs. 22,132 crore (US$ 4,713 million). Nokia production volume crosses 350 million handsets in over four years of operation in Sriperumbudur, Chennai

Reliance Communications signs strategic alliance with GetJar to create India’s largest and free mobile Apps Store

Abilene Christian University, Cambridge University Press and Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs have embarked on a joint research project whose intent is to set out a new path towards the future of publishing - from creation through distribution - by putting tools that enhance education in the hands of individuals. For hundreds of years, educators have relied on static, standardised textbooks to deliver information to students. A new generation of mobile devices is changing the education landscape, offering students opportunities for dynamic, individualised learning. With the advent of converged mobile technologies (epitomised first by Apple's iPhone and iPod touch mobile digital devices and most recently by the introduction of Apple’s iPad tablet computer) the three organisations have been analysing what it means to read, write, and publish in the learning space in the digital age. In response to the intensifying demand for 4G WiMAX networks and services, the WiMAX Forum today launched a global initiative to accelerate advanced WiMAX features that enhance the average performance of its current Release 1 technology by more than 50 percent while remaining compliant with the IEEE Standard 802.16e. Based on this accelerated schedule, certified products using these enhancements are expected in late 2010. This initiative will not delay the development of WiMAX Release 2 (WiMAX 2).
